Tabasco.

One of the most universal add ons people use in their food. What makes it so special? What makes so many people around the world have that one tiny red bottle with a green collar in their kitchen? JUST THREE THINGS. Distilled vinegar, salt and red pepper. Yes, that's it. Don't believe me? Check the ingredients written at the back of the bottle. How do they do it? No one knows. Its one of the biggest secrets in the culinary world according to me and not something that someone can just... make. Tabasco.

No continental food seems complete without a drop or two of Tabasco. Used in seasoning, marinating or just sprinkling a few drops on a boring roast chicken, Tabasco is also a movie star. It appeared in many movies, some as far back as Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times in 1936. Whoa. That's quite a legacy for a simple bottle with red liquid in it. This legendary hot sauce was first produced in 1868 by Edward McIlhenny in Louisiana. Thank you sir, and bravo!

Tabasco also starred in an animated version in Disney's The Princess & the Frog, the first Disney movie featuring a black princess! Tiana dreams of opening a restaurant and adds Tabasco to a boring old recipe referring to it as "the only thing missing".

I kind of went on a crazy fact-stating rant there, but the magic of Tabasco just struck me on the dinner table tonight. Here's to spicing up our lives forever ;)

Roots.

Hey guys! It's been a while. Not studying for my boards has kept me quite busy, but couldn't keep me away for long!

Before we develop a taste for caviar and champagne, there's always food that we've grown up having. Food that we love. Food that you don't pay more than 50 bucks for. Food that our parents had when they went to college. Yeah... Imagine that! There's this tiny place called Prakash in Shivaji Park.
Let me give you a few reasons to go there:

  • You share a table with complete strangers cause there just isn't enough place for one table per group. So you sit next to or opposite people you've never seen before in your life and who find absolutely nothing weird in sitting next to a group of giggling teens :P

  • Then ofcourse, if you're tight on a budget, a meal for two really wont cost you more than a 100 bucks. Yes. I'm serious.
  • The service is pretty brilliant. Shirts and shorts clad waiters bustle around the small restaurant with utmost efficiency. If you know Marathi, great! If you don't, take a Marathi friend along with you to make you feel more at home.
  • Most cheap food ends up making us sick and eating bland food at home, but not this joint! Contrary to what elitists think, this place is pretty clean and hey! My parents ate here so it really can't be that bad :P
  • Lastly, go to this place for its simplicity and really yummy Maharashtrian snacks. My favs are the Misal, Sabudana Vada and Piyush. All costs around 30 bucks.

That's right guys, don't ever forget your roots. Don't ever forget what got you to the top and what made you who you are. Don't let the glitz and glamour that you finally achieve ever get so blinding that you can't see the path that got you there. And lastly, good food isn't always found in the swankiest places. Don't forget the simple pleasures while enjoying the exotic ones :)

The Lull.

Never has there been a more unfashionable period in my life (being a chubby 10 year old with a weird haircut doesn't count :P). So yes. That's what I want to say, studying and fashion just don't mix. Kinda like stripes and dots. I'm so glad that I'm hardly exposed to the public, cause if you saw me now... Wow...

But hey, that's life. When you gotta study you gotta study. No matter how less the time is to pick your clothes in the morning because you gotta use that for last minute cramming, no matter how geekily you have to tie your hair so that it doesn't bother you while writing your paper. It's just something that has to be done. So do what I'm doing. Not doubting my fashion sense and just trying to get these boards over with as soon as possible cause after the lull you ALWAYS have the storm ;)

That's all the time I have for confessing. Gotta go study and  not think about how I look!

Binge Eating.

Okay, so you all know what a terrible time it is JUST before your exams. The constant obligation to study, the constant guilt of not having studied and most importantly, ALWAYS FEELING HUNGRY.

Now this could be a problem for people who are a little too concerned about their weight. Me? I'm concerned! Totally concerned! But.. Well.. Food's just more important I guess :P
Before your exams is the perfect time to just eat all the comfort food that you feel guilty about usually eating. Best part? Your mom wont nag you.
Why? Cause you're studying ofcourse! ;)
Catch up on all the junk you missed . Everything you'd been avoiding cause a hot party had been coming up. Just let loose... EAT.
You'll have loads of time to shape up after, honest!

So, in conclusion, let me tell you a few great places to get great comfort food from:
Try Le15 at Phoenix. By far the best cupcakes I've had in Bombay. Hazelnut, Belgian Chocolate, Oreo & Red Velvet are some of the flavours they have! My favourite: Belgian Chocolate and Hazelnut
This place also has heavenly Macaroons! Light, airy cookie like things sandwiched with yummy fillings! Flavours? Rose, Lavender, Passion fruit, Coffee, Hazelnut, etc. My fav: Hazelnut & Rose

You've all heard of Mad Over Donuts I'm sure! Drop by an pick out your favourite Donuts! They have the Classic glazed, Cinnaster, Double Trouble, Dark Knight and pizza donuts as well! Go loose yourselves in these great American treats!

Comfort Food can also be made at home! Try some of my personal favourites: Grilled Cheese, Hot chocolate, Mac n Cheese! I'll tell you how to make them a little later, my books seem to be calling me to their land of complete boredom! Till then, let loose and eat!
